Who appears in mover counts

State mover totals include records with a household-goods carrier or broker authority indicator. The broader federal-record count also includes other motor carriers in the source. State pages show licensed movers by default and let researchers deliberately switch to the broader universe.

Federal company layer

Company identity, registration status, authority indicators, insurance filing indicators, fleet size, inspections, out-of-service rates, crashes and safety ratings come from FMCSA datasets collected in August 2026. Every profile links to its exact FMCSA Company Snapshot for a current check.

What the labels mean

“Active” describes the registration field in the collected source. “Allowed to move household goods” is based on household-goods authority indicators. “Both insurance filings found” means the liability and cargo indicators were present in the collected data. A missing filing requires review; it is not proof of fraud.

State rankings

Map rankings use only disclosed facts: licensed-mover counts, registration rates, insurance-filing rates and the share with safety activity. Company lists can be sorted by name, fleet size, inspection count or registration date. These are not “best mover” rankings and should not be read as quality scores.

Safety limitations

Zero inspections does not mean a perfect safety record. “Not rated” is not a passing rating. Out-of-service percentages describe inspected vehicles or drivers in the reporting period and can be volatile when samples are small.

Price layer

WhatDidYouPay benchmarks contain 649 paid-price observations across Washington, DC, New York City and Chicago. They are descriptive samples, not quotes. Exact-company figures appear only when enough moderated reports exist to avoid a misleading result.

Corrections and freshness

Each company report displays the source-update date and links to FMCSA. Use “Correct a record” to flag a mismatch, company-name issue, privacy request or changed status. Corrections remain pending until reviewed against evidence.
